Alzheimer’s Awareness Month
[Brevard County, FL] The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners, by resolution will declare April 2008 as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in Brevard County at their meeting on March 18. Nationally, Brevard County ranks 24th in senior demographics which equals approximately 23% of the county’s population. Because 1 in 10 residents at age 65 and half at age 85 are diagnosed with the disease, it is imperative that all residents understand that they are affected by Alzheimer’s disease either physically, economically, or personally. During April, several events are scheduled to raise awareness of services available to Brevard residents who are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Every 72 seconds, someone in the United States is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. If it is you or someone you love, where can you go for help?
The Brevard Alzheimer’s Foundation will host a Healthy “HEY DAY” at the Alzheimer’s Care Center, 4676 N. Wickham Rd. in Melbourne on Wednesday, April 2. The public is invited to learn more about warning signs, symptoms, diagnosis, medical and home care, and the benefits of adult day care “engagement” therapy.
April 12 is WALK FOR ALZHEIMER’S DAY at 3 locations throughout Brevard County, Titusville, Melbourne and Mims. Families, groups, and individuals are invited to join the walk for a cure and for care for Alzheimer’s victims.
Motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to join the POKER RUN on April 13 in South Brevard County. Draw the winning hand for prizes while raising funds so Alzheimer’s victims and their care giving families can be winners as well!
